How We Treat

Muscle Re-education

Muscle re-education is a common technique used in pelvic floor therapy to help patients improve the strength and coordination of their pelvic floor muscles.

The goal of muscle re-education is to help patients learn how to properly contract and relax their pelvic floor muscles in order to improve bladder and bowel function, reduce pelvic pain, improve pelvic organ prolapse symptoms, and enhance sexual function.

Muscle re-education can involve exercise, electrical stimulation (performed vaginally or rectally), down training of the sympathetic nervous system (“fight or flight”), and patient education.
